MARION COUNTY -The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reminds motorists to make travel plans ahead of Labor Day weekend as routes may be impacted by the current 18-month closure of the North Split Interchange. All local streets downtown will be open and accessible for motorists through the holiday weekend.
INDOT also reminds motorists that following Labor Day weekend on September 8, eastbound Ohio Street will close to traffic and pedestrians at College Avenue through September 29, weather permitting. All eastbound Ohio Street traffic will be redirected to New York Street via College Avenue for the duration of this closure.
Lewis Street underneath the interstate will also close to traffic and pedestrians nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting September 7 through September 14, weather permitting. All vehicular traffic will be redirected to 13th Street, Commerce Avenue, and 16th Street during the hours of the closure. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be routed to the Monon Loop.
If traveling through Indianapolis for the Labor Day holiday, motorists can avoid North Split construction by using detour routes on I-465, I-65 and I-70.
Currently, I-65 and I-70 between the North Split and Washington Street is closed to all traffic while bridges and roadways are reconstructed. However, access in and out of downtown remains via the I-70 westbound exit ramp to Ohio Streets. Also, the Pine Street entrance ramp to I-70 eastbound is open. In addition, the I-65 southbound to I-70 eastbound and I-70 westbound to I-65 northbound connections remain open to traffic during construction. At Washington Street, the entrance ramp to I-65 southbound and the exit ramp from I-65 northbound also remain open.

Access to downtown Indianapolis will be maintained via:

- Pine St. entrance ramp to I-70 eastbound
- I-65 northbound/I-70 eastbound exit ramp to Washington St.
- I-65 northbound and southbound to Martin Luther King. Jr./West St.
- I-65 southbound to Meridian St.
- All existing ramps on I-70 west of the South Split
