Serious crash on toll road sends five to the hospital

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY- Just after 8:00 p.m. last night, April 22, 2024, Indiana State Troopers responded to a serious crash on the Indiana Toll Road that sent several people to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Garrett Tharp and Trooper Nathan Littlefield indicates that at approximately 8:08 p.m., a black 2021 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Stuart Davies, 53 of the United Kingdom, was driving westbound on the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 76.8.  Davies reportedly began to slow to exit at the Notre Dame Exit when the Chrysler was hit from behind by a white 2023 International straight truck driven by Corey Bonczynski, 47 of Grand Island, NE.

The collision pushed the Chrysler into the guardrail on the right side of the road causing extensive damage to the front.  The Chrysler then spun back into westbound lanes and came to rest.  Kerys Davies, 25 of the United Kingdom was seated in the rearmost seat of the Chrysler and was ejected in the crash.  She was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN with injuries that are believed to be serious but not life-threatening.  Davies was wearing a seatbelt but ejected due to the extensive damage to the Chrysler.  Three other passengers in the Chrysler, as well as the driver, S. Davies, were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries and complaints of pain.  Bonczynski was not injured in the crash.

One lane was opened at approximately 9:00 p.m. with the second lane opening at approximately 9:30 p.m.  Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be factors in this crash.
