Bedford Rotary Club: Support their fish fry and their community mission

BEDFORD- The Bedford Rotary Club will host its annual Dr. Dan Schafer Memorial Fish Fry on Friday, June 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bedford Knights of Columbus building at 2202 M St. The menu will include fried fish and chicken, sides, desserts, and refreshments. Alcohol can be purchased separately.

The Rotary Club of Bedford is a service organization dedicated to Lawrence County since 1919. While they donate to numerous local charities and non-profit organizations, their main focus is the gift of education. Rotary Clubs are part of Rotary International, the world’s largest and oldest community service organization.

Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self,” which is evident when you review the long list of charitable works completed by the local club and its members. They help by donating money, time, and resources to non-profits in the area, such as The Mens Warming Shelter and The Salvation Army.

Throughout the year, the club participates in the Salvation Army Tree, hosts the Dr. Dan Schafer Fish Fry, sells mums, and hosts the Annual Mayor John Williams Scholarship toast, among other events. The hard work and money collected at these events are for charitable purposes.

This year, the Bedford Rotarians hosted an international student from Thailand who spent the school year attending Mitchell High School. This fall, they will speak with parents about sending one of our local students to study abroad as part of the student exchange program.

Teachers Warehouse is a place where local teachers can pick up supplies for free. Public school teachers from Monroe, Brown, Lawrence, Greene, and Owen counties may “shop” there. The Teachers Warehouse is located at 524 N. Fairview Street in Bloomington and is partly sponsored by the Bedford Rotary Club.

The Dr. Dan Schafer Fish Fry, happening this Saturday, is a large part of the fundraising that goes toward Rotary education projects. Without community support the student exchange program, scholarships, the Teachers Warehouse, and the many other charitable works the Rotary Club takes part in would not be possible. Come support your community and enjoy some good food as a reward.
