(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington coalition is lobbying the state legislature to lift the lifetime ban that prohibits convicted drug felons from receiving federal benefits.
Citizens for Effective Justice Spokesman Bruce Bundy says the ban has been lifted in 33 states so far.
Bundy says a bill in the Indiana House has too many hoops for drug offenders to jump through, so his group does not support the bill as worded.
Hal Taylor, CEJ's "new leaf, new life" president, says the ban represents vindictive justice and is not effective in reducing crime or rehabilitating criminals.
