(GREENE COUNTY) - A Greene County farmhouse built in the early to mid-1800’s has been nearly destroyed by a fire set in motion by squirrels.
A passerby knocked on the door of Jim Ferguson's home on March 3rd to tell him flames were coming from the roof. The fire was contained in the attic and destroyed the roof and upstairs ceiling.
The cause was traced to two squirrels who built a next too close to the chimney. Ferguson's son says his father lives on his social security checks and can't afford homeowners insurance. A fund has been established to help repair the farmhouse.
The Ferguson family is well known at the Bloomington Farmer's Market for their Ferguson Valley Farms stand.
