(OOLITIC) - More details have become available on the attempted suicide in Oolitic.
Indiana State Police from the Bloomington Post say Bedford Police Officer Steve Kidd stopped a possible drunk driver on Lincoln Avenue Wednesday night.
While Kidd was questioning the driver, the driver sped away in his vehicle. Kidd pursued the runaway through the town of Oolitic. The suspect then abruptly stopped his auto on Lafayette Avenue.
As Kidd attempted to approach the suspect's vehicle, he noticed the barrel of a gun protruding from the driver's side window. Kidd ordered the man to put down the gun, but the suspect shot himself, causing a self-inflected wound to his forehead.
The driver was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is listed in grave condition.
Assisting at the scene were the Oolitic Town Marshal, Lawrence County Police and the Indiana State Police.
The investigation continues.
