(NEEDMORE) - A Bedford man has been found dead following an accident at Gulletts Creek Bridge near Needmore.
Lawrence County Police were alerted of the accident when a caller said they spotted a crashed vehicle near the bridge.
A nearby resident told police they heard a crash and went to investigate. Both callers said they found the driver lifeless.
A police investigation shows that 45-year-old Robert Holt was traveling on Old State Road 37, when for an unknown reason, drove off the right side of the road. Holt apparently tried to get back on the road, but over corrected and slid broadside off the road.
Holt's vehicle then hit a tree and an electrical utility pole. His vehicle continued over an embankment, hitting several more trees before coming to rest in the dry creek bed.
Police examined all of the evidence and concluded that Holt was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the accident.
Holt's vehicle smelled of alcohol, but due to his massive head injures, police were unable to determine an exact cause for the accident.
Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill is to perform an autopsy to determine whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
