(CORTLAND) - Jackson County police are looking for a man who attempted to shoot a police officer last night.
Officer Adam Nicholson spotted a man walking along a county road near Cortland. When he went to check on the man, the individual turned and fired a handgun. Nicholson returned fire and the suspect fled into the nearby woods. Nicholson radioed for back-up. Units from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Seymour police and the Indiana State Police arrived on the scene. Police searched the woods assisted with Seymour's K-9 Koa. A helicopter was called in from the Indiana State Police using infrared cameras.
Rain hampered the search which was continued this morning. The suspect is a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, 200 pounds wearing red shorts and a black shirt. He is possibly injured and considered armed and dangerous. Police say residents living in the Cortland area to remain inside until further notice. Anyone with information can help police by calling the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
