City Workers Receive Raises, Mayor And Clerk-Treasurer Do Not

Last updated on Wednesday, August 15, 2007

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford City Council voted on several salary ordinances in last night’s meeting.

City workers will receive a 2½% pay increase for next year including Bedford police officers, fire fighters and park department heads. Other workers for the city will also enjoy the 2½% raise.

For elected officials in Bedford the story is a bit different. There was no provision for an increase in the Mayor's or the Clerk-Treasurer's position, council members were given the 2½% increase.

Council member Pat Robbins disagreed with the increase while Byron Buker did not like raising his own salary. Mark Scherschel defended the increase by saying the town has one of the lowest town council rates in the state. He said to attract new members the pay should be competitive.

The vote went through the second passage. The third and final vote will take place when the group meets again in September.
