(BLOOMINGTON) - Today is Halloween, which means kids, candy, costumes and jack-o-lanterns. But what to do with those pumpkins come tomorrow?
Some people toss them in the garbage, some just let them rot on the porch until April, and some people design and build a catapult and launch them at the annual Thompson Park Pumpkin Launch in Bloomington.
Since 2002, hundreds of people show up to the contest which tasks entrants with launching a pumpkin of at least 5 pounds using human power only. No electricity, hydraulics, fuel or compressed air is allowed.
The winners of the contest are judged in both distance and accuracy events. The winner of the longest launch contest stands to win a prize package worth around $200.
