(BEDFORD) - A habitual traffic offender caused a significant accident early this morning on route 37 just north of route 58.
Bedford police say 37-year-old Danny J. McCloud of Bedford was traveling southbound on 37 approaching 58, when he allegedly tried to pass a pair of tractor trailers at a high rate of speed.
When McCloud made the attempt, he came upon another vehicle already in the passing lane, tried to duck around the SUV on the right, but struck the car anyway.
McCloud's vehicle was deflected across the median into the northbound lanes where he struck the rock wall, and rolled his Jeep 9 times landing upside down.
Witnesses helped McCloud out of the vehicle since it had caught fire, but when Bedford police arrived at the scene shortly after, they allegedly found McCloud walking in the southbound shoulder away from the scene.
Officers approached, and McCloud said he was in an accident but he had to get home, and took off running. Police caught up and captured McCloud, when they allegedly smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person.
McCloud was taken to Bedford Regional Medical Center for his injuries, and then to Lawrence County jail, charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting arrest by fleeing, and being a habitual traffic violator.
