(BEDFORD) - An Indiana University student was killed in an automobile accident Saturday morning in Lawrence County as he was heading to his Scottsburg home.
Lawrence county sheriffs say 24-year-old Dustin Jones, a 2nd year optometry student, was heading south on SR-446 when he missed a turn at the US-50 intersection, ran through the farmer's market parking lot, launching airborne for about 50 feet, ran through a fence at the back of the lot and struck a nearby tree, killing him instantly.
According to Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill, Jones suffered major head injuries along with several smaller injuries.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident, including whether or not alcohol played a roll.
Jones was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle; results of blood alcohol tests are currently pending.
