(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man is dead after a freak accident out in the county Tuesday afternoon.
According to reports done by Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies, 76-year-old Gerald Turner of Bedford, better known as "John," was killed when his compact pickup was struck on the driver's door by a large, commercial truck.
His passenger, 76-year-old Barbara Turner was severely injured as well, showing major bleeding all over her body when emergency crews arrived.
According to the report, 44-year-old David Holt of Springville was driving his commercially outfitted Ford Super-Duty truck southbound on Old 37 and, as he approached Old Needmore School Road, he saw Turner's GMC pull out in front of him.
Holt tried to swerve to miss Turner's truck, but was unsuccessful.
Holt's F-350, which as outfitted could weigh as much as 4 tons, smashed directly into John Turner's door.
The Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana State Troopers both conducted an inspection of Holt's truck and found no defects.
