(JASPER) - For the second straight year, someone plunked a solid gold coin into a Salvation Army kettle in Dubois County.
Gerald Cunningham is the bell coordinator with the county's Salvation Army. He found the South African Krugerrand worth about $800, along with damp bills and coins he was drying out on his living room floor.
Cunningham says he saw a glint of gold as he unwrapped a moist bill he'd dumped out of one of the kettles used by volunteers to collect donations.
A similar donation last year paid for 500 small gifts for local nursing home residents and provided 200 school kits to needy elementary-age students.
