(UNDATED) - The holiday travel period can be one of the deadliest times of the year on the highways.
State police say last year during the Christmas and new year's period 26 people died in accidents on Hoosier roads. Six of those accidents involved alcohol or drugs.
ISP Sergeant Dwight Holbrook at the Evansville post says extra troopers will be working their days off through the federal "Operation Care" program. Troopers will be looking for drunk drivers, speeders and aggressive drivers and motorists who don't buckle up.
Holbrook also says find a designated driver if you plan to attend a holiday party and drink alcohol.
