(UNDATED) - A lot of the people and places in the news in May of 2007 needed luck to get through.
Bedford Primary Elections Yield Interesting Results
The month really started on May 8th with the primary elections in Bedford, and the surprising results that came.
Specifically, incumbent Republican Mayor Joe Klumpp would be unseated in his bid to be the nominee again by the first woman to ever win a primary for mayor in Bedford, former first lady of Bedford, Jean Williams.
The margin of victory, however, was razor thin at 25 votes, causing Klumpp to call for a recount he would eventually lose.
Ironically, Williams' most outspoken rival, Sam Shaw, would only grab 22 votes.
Terrel Wins Primary, Faces Chastain In General Election
In Mitchell, Dan Terrell would win the nod to run as the Republican candidate for mayor over 2 challengers and would take on incumbent Mayor Butch Chastain who easily won his primary.
The race between Terrell and Chastain would be a heated one throughout the rest of the campaign season.
"Big Al" Sweeps Democratic Nom
"Big Al" Craig would also win the Democratic nomination for Bedford mayor by defeating Tony Van Pelt by a healthier margin.
However, Van Pelt would not be out of politics after this loss, as he would go on to declare himself a candidate against State Senator Brent Steele in December.
Missing Man Found Dead
In the middle of May, the body of 65-year-old Opal Cobb was found in a pile of driftwood in Salt Creek about 12 miles downstream from where officials suspect he fell in.
Cobb was thought to have fallen in almost a month to the day beforehand.
West Baden Springs Hotel Opens To Public
The century old West Baden Springs Hotel would re-open in late May after a $90-million dollar restoration next to the French Lick Resort and Casino.
One of the biggest revamps was the addition of expensive flat-panel televisions in all rooms, and 40 rooms having balconies overlooking the impressive atrium.
