(BEDFORD) - Yesterday was the first day those seeking public office in Lawrence County could file for candidacy in the May primary election.
Challengers in 2 state legislative races have already gotten an early start to their campaigns.
Republican Jamie J. Harris of Bedford will vie for the State House seat in District 62, challenging Democrat Sandy Blanton, the rookie who replaced the retired Representative Jerry Denbo.
Additionally, Democrat Tony "Big Dog" Van Pelt has filed to challenge Republican State Senator Brent Steele for his District 44 Senate seat, Van Pelt himself coming off a decisive loss to Alan "Big Al" Craig in last year's Democratic mayoral primary.
Several county incumbents have also filed to keep their jobs, including County Clerk Myron Rainey, and Treasurer Debbie Harrison Thompson.
