(BEDFORD) - It took 23 rounds of intense spelling for Lauren White to claim victory during day one coverage of the 2008 annual 1340 AM WBIW spelling bee.
Lauren, a fourth grader from Burris Elementary, won with the words "quiver" and "carnival"; but not before tossing the possible victory back and forth between fellow speller Brittany Stovall.
During the spelling bee, Lauren and Brittany both had opportunities to take the win, but both failed to spell an additional word to claim overall victory. This happened in the 17th, 19th and 21st rounds. In the 23rd round, Brittany misspelled the word "interlinear", opening the window once again for Lauren to take the bee.
Justice Kline went out in round 7 and placed fourth overall. 5 rounds later Nick Johnson went out in round 12 and placed third overall.
10 spellers participated in the day one broadcast. Listed below is the order the students spelled during the competition. Also listed are the names of the school they attend.
