(BEDFORD) - Emma Adams, a 7th grader from Mitchell Junior High, was declared the overall winner of the 2008 annual 1340 AM WBIW spelling bee.
Emma faced six other spellers and overcame each in less than six rounds. If you recall, it took 23 rounds before an individual winner was declared in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade category on Tuesday.
Emma won the county championship by correctly spelling the two words "commando" and "sucrose". Runner up honors were claimed by Alex Anderson, an 8th grader from Shawswick Middle School. Alex went out in the sixth round by misspelling the word "deserter".
Earlier during the event, Lauren White; the winner from day one festivities; was quickly knocked out of the competition and went out in round one on the word "grenade".
Overall, seven spellers participated in the day two broadcast. Listed below is the order the students spelled during the competition. Also listed is the name of the school the student currently attends.
Allie Slaven, Bedford Middle School
Lauren White, Burris Elementary
Natasha Awbrey, Home schooled
Amanda Lin, St. Vincent De Paul
Emma Adams, Mitchell Junior High
Alex Anderson, Shawswick Middle School
Daniel McFarland, St. Vincent De Paul
Congratulations to all of our spellers that participated in this year's festivities! We are proud of each and every one of you!
