(CRANE) - The Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane has taken delivery of a new toy.
The Navy announced that Crane is now in possession of an advanced transportable laser demonstrator.
What does that do, you ask?
Well, it mounts on the back of a specially modified ford super duty commercial grade truck and fires ultra-short pulse lasers.
Right now, Crane is exploring the laser's use in temporarily disrupting or degrading enemy equipment, without actually damaging it.
One Crane official said that the base has been experimenting with the technology in laboratory conditions and, with the system now being portable, can test it in real-live conditions with weather and other environmental variables.
