(CLOVERDALE) - A Spencer man was picked up for fraud and auto theft in Cloverdale.
State Police Putnamville allege 40-year-old James Neal of Spencer stole two vehicles from a Cloverdale Discount Tire parking lot, and then tried to sell them to a salvage yard in Spencer, claiming to be a Discount Tire employee.
Jeff Everman, who actually does work for Discount Tire, told Tom Greene of Greene Auto Salvage that he had approved no such sale.
Greene told authorities that he was given instructions to leave payment for the vehicles in a mailbox, and that Neal, the alleged thief, would be by to pick it up. Knowing this, state police from both Bloomington and Putnamville set up a sting that resulted in the arrest of Neal.
Neal is currently being held without bond in Putnam County jail facing one count of fraud, two counts of theft, and is also facing an outstanding Monroe County warrant, also for theft.
