(BLOOMINGTON) - In an attempt to increase public safety around the college town, the Bloomington Fire Department will be recommending an upgrade to the city’s fire code be approved by city council in the coming weeks.
These changes will serve to enhance public safety at local businesses, align local codes with the state's fire codes, and help owners protect their businesses.
The original fire code was made by the city in 1976 and slight revisions were made in 1997.
Officials feel that upgrading fines will encourage business owners to find immediate solutions to lingering fire safety concerns, and with the new fire code fines will increase to as much as 2,500 dollars depending on the severity of the violation.
