(BEDFORD) - Last night, people gathered for a public meeting to discuss the merger between Dunn Memorial Hospital and Bedford Regional Medical Center at Schafer Auditorium, and it seems to be the county is mostly in favor.
Bedford City Council President Byron Buker said that, as with any change, this will probably hurt at first, but we'll be better off for it, saying this would end up benefiting Lawrence County much like the expansion of IN-37 did, which also received a tepid response at first.
However, Mitchell Mayor Dan Terrell seemed to have put the most relevant light on the issue, saying, with hospitals, bigger is apparently better, and bigger is where you're going to get sent anyway if you need critical care, citing the examples of his recently passed father and sister needing to be transferred to Bloomington Hospital for care not available here.
No word yet on when the decision to merge the two hospitals may be made.
