(BEDFORD) - Unemployment numbers in South Central Indiana have taken a surprise step down, bucking both national and state trends.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has released statistics for the 8th Economic Growth Region which includes Brown, Daviess, Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange and owen Counties, and unemployment has gone from 5.5% in the region, to 5.2%.
Even more surprising his how well Lawrence County faired, going from 7.7% to 7.3%, and Bedford itself going from 8.2% to 4.4%.
These new statistics let Lawrence County drop from the top counties in terms of highest unemployment, to number 10 in the state. Still high, yes, but when we were at number 2 just the month prior, that's not bad at all.
The information collected covers March of this year, since that is the most recent data compiled.
Indiana climbed from 5.3% to 5.6%, and the US average held steady at 5.2%.
