(INDIANAPOLIS) - The National Weather Service in Indinapolis has declared this week Lightning Safety Awareness Week.
NWS officials say lightning is the number 2 severe weather killer, claiming 60 lives and 500 injuries per year and, though most obviously survive, they say serious and sometimes permanent physical and mental effects can remain.
And that's why they want to keep you safe from lightning.
The NWS wants to remind Hoosiers to keep safe from lightning by seeking shelter as soon as you hear thunder.
They say if you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. If you can't find proper shelter, at least don't be, or hide under, the tallest thing in a given area, like a tree.
Additionally, when there's lightning in the area, don't take showers and generally keep clear of plumbing and corded appliances.
Lightning surges can carry through the power and plumbing lines in your home.
