(BLOOMINGTON) - A lawsuit by a former Monroe County inmate has just been granted class action status by a federal judge.
According to a report in the Bloomington Herald Times, the lawsuit, brought by former inmate Trevor Richardson, alleges the Monroe County jail at the time was overcrowded leading to unconstitutional conditions.
Attorneys representing the county say they will ask the judge to reconsider the granting of class-action status, but if that doesn't get anywhere, the paper says the court would then work to specifically define the class.
Monroe County Sheriff Jim Kennedy tells the paper the department does what it can with what it has.
