(MITCHELL) - The Persimmon Festival Parade was another winner, on the whole, this weekend. Overall, parade MC Johnny Henderson says he feels this was one of the better parades he’s seen in Mitchell.
"I think it was better this year," Henderson said right after the parade finished.
"They opened it up a bit more this year...the Hometown Heroes theme this year was so good because you could have not only the military but the police, the firemen, you go to the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts and all the groups. I think it was well represented and the South Shore Drill Team, always a big, big hit. I think it was one of the better ones the last few years and you couldn't ask for a better day."
The big show stealer, it seems, was the South Shore Drill Team from Chicago again, a veritable army of marchers followed by a literal wall of sound.
The best local entry, as voted on by the parade committee, was the "Puppets on God's Highway" entry by the Mitchell First Church of God.
Overall, a good time was had by all, including local resident Mahi Nickeo.
"It was great, I mean the dancers, the group from Chicago, the old cars, 'cause I'm an old car man, so yeah!" said Nickeo.
And now, with the parade run through, the persimmon festival is closed for business until next fall.
