(FERDINAND) - State police from the Jasper post had a fatal accident on I-64 over the weekend.
Officers say a Mercury SUV was heading east on I-64 when, for reasons unknown, it left the roadway, reentered, and then rolled over several times throwing the passenger out near Ferdinand.
The passenger, 65-year-old Judith McDowell of Cape Girardeau, Missouri was pronounced dead on the scene by the Dubois County coroner.
Her husband, the driver, 67-year-old David McDowell of Cape Girardeau, was taken to Jasper Hospital and then airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
Police say both were wearing their seatbelts, but that sometimes, safety equipment can't stand up to some circumstances in accidents.
