(BEDFORD) - There’s been a large number of accidents this month in Lawrence County, and more than half of them have been related to deer.
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig tells WBIW News there have been 54 accidents reported in his jurisdiction so far this month, and 28 of them involve deer.
Firearm deer season is in full swing as of the 15th and continues through November 30th, which means deer populations are more mobile.
But even at that, Sheriff Craig says he's "amazed" at the number of car-deer accidents he's had reported. Sheriff Craig says he doesn't know if it's a larger number than usual, but he still offers tips to keep you safe, including: Watching the road and your speed, use your horn if you come across a deer, and if you're going to hit one, don't swerve.
A deer is much softer to run into than the trees and the ditches and ravines alongside the road.
