(SEYMOUR) - Katie Stam of Seymour has been crowned Miss America in Las Vegas.
The 22 year-old University of Indianapolis student fought off a throat infection and laryngitis to win the competition.
She becomes the first Hoosier to win the crown in the history of the pageant. Connie Stockover, owner of the Towne House Cafe in Seymour, says everyone in town had all kinds of faith in her. Katie's win was an emotional moment for some residents who cried when she was crowned Miss America in Las Vegas.
Katie's parents are both teachers in Seymour.
Mayor Craig Luedeman promises a big party to welcome Miss America home when she returns home.
