(BLOOMINGTON) - At around 4:00pm yesterday afternoon staff at the Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center at IU were urged to evacuate the building when they learned that its roof was on fire.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they were forced to cut the roof open to even begin to extinguish the flames.
Overall, the blaze destroyed about an acre of the buildings roof.
Everyone was able to evacuate the building safely and the IU Police department estimates the final damage done amounted between $100,000 and $500,000.
The Bloomington Fire Department will continue to investigate the cause of the fire, as well as determine what type of clean-up will be needed for the building.
Indiana University Bloomington is currently on winter break.
