Jackson County Jail Overcrowded, Understaffed

Last updated on Friday, February 27, 2009

(BROWNSTOWN) - It’s a bit crowded in the Jackson County jail these days.

The Seymour Tribune reports the Jackson County Security Center, located in Brownstown, has been over capacity for some time now.

Throughout the year 2008, the paper says the average daily inmate count in Brownstown was just over 200, which is concerning when you consider the jail was designed to only hold 164 inmates.

Jackson County Sheriff Marc Lahrman told the Tribune that the overcrowding isn't just tough on his crew manning the jail, but on the inmates as well, since there's less space, more conflict, more theft, and more problems overall.

And since jailers are so overworked, it makes it harder for them to catch everything they need to.
