(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners decided against immediate action on a county wide burn ban at their meeting this morning, and are instead, encouraging citizens to use caution.
Lawrence County Commision Chair Chris May said, "We'll consider the burn ban, potentially, wait 'til next meeting to see where we are, but we also do want the general public to recognize that we are having issues and if we don't see some rain here in the next few days it's only going to get worse."
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig conveyed the concerns of the Lawrence County Volunteer Firefighters Association to the commissioners, and added his own.
"I would even request at this point in time even that there not be, preferably, any controlled burns because it is so dry that it's a possibility it may get out of hand," Craig explained at the end of the meeting. "And if we can evaluate this from day to day, or whatever, we'll go from there."
Lawrence county firefighters dealt with at least 6 field fires over this past weekend, and 2 more yesterday.
