Do We Need A Burn Ban? Area Fire Chiefs Say, "Yes!"

Last updated on Monday, March 16, 2009

(BEDFORD) - Another series of fires in Lawrence County over the weekend has rural fire crews asking for a burn ban in the county.

Lawrence County logs show at least 6 field fires over the weekend, 4 alone were on Sunday, and the occurred in townships from Shawswick to Guthrie to Indian Creek to Pleasant Run.

Pleasant Run Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Nolan, who also leads the Countywide Firefighters Association, tells us Lawrence County volunteer fire chiefs are angling for a burn ban since conditions remain so dry.

Guthrie Volunteer Fire Chief Brian Hutchinson tells us that, though he wasn't aware of the movement by the association, he would be in support of it.

Tunnelton and Fort Ritner, which both lay in Hutchinson's district, have been especially hard-struck by field fires.

Nolan says he had one fire recently in Pleasant Run on Chapel Hill Road that started as a controlled junk fire, and finished by him and his crews putting out a pair of outbuildings on the property.
