February Unemployment Numbers Are Mixed Bag For State, Area

Last updated on Friday, March 27, 2009

(UNDATED) - Unemployment numbers from February are out for Indiana and the counties within the listening area, and the news…is mixed.

Lawrence County stayed statistically flat, really, only rising from 14.5% to 14.7%, as 245 fewer people have jobs here. However, what was surprising about last month's report is the combination of counties that jumped into double-digits for the first time in this recession, and how many counties saw a decrease in unemployment.

Seven of Indiana's 92 counties, including Jackson, saw double digits come about this February, however, 20 counties saw unemployment fall, most of which were in the hard-hit north. Howard County, home of the City of Kokomo, saw the biggest drop in the state, going from a near-record 18.5% to 12.8%.

Overall, in the state, more than 13,000 people are no longer working, while 331,000 Americans overall are out of work.

Indiana's unemployment rate went from 9.3% to 9.4%, the nations from 7.6% to 8.1%, both nearing dangerous territory.
