(BEDFORD) - Despite rumors to the contrary, nobody was shot, killed, targeted or otherwise hurt at the Bedford Wal-Mart yesterday.
Dispatchers at the Bedford Police Department tell us they received around 40 calls late yesterday relating to a text message that was floating around the area saying a gang initiation could take place at the mega-retailer, in which women with children would be targeted for murder.
Unsurprisingly, it was another pop culture hoax that's at least 4 years old according to rumor-mill website snopes.com.
This same hoax has been circulated in Memphis, North Texas, Washington, DC, and Chicago and, in varying forms, has also included Wal-Mart competitor Target.
It's just another mud-stirrer just like the rumor about gang initiations involving would-be hit men driving cars at nighttime without their lights on, targeting anyone who flashes lights at them.
