(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County unemployment goes down in the county-by-county rankings, but this is in spite of a 3% jump in overall unemployment in the county.
The Department of Workforce Development has finally released their unemployment report for January, about 3 weeks later than usual, showing Lawrence County went from 11.5% unemployment in December to 14.5% unemployment in January.
Not only is the jump significant, but to is the overall rate, as ideal unemployment is usually considered to be less than 5%. By that rate, all of Indiana is in trouble, as the lowest unemployment in the state, in Daviess County, is at 5.9%, second lowest in Monroe being 6.0%.
Elkhart remains at the top of the list, however, with 18.3% unemployment, largely owing to the collapse in the RV industry.
Other nearby counties with double-digit unemployment include Orange at 10.4%, Washington at 11.9%, and Brown at 10.9%, and Jackson is on the edge at 9.7%.
