(WEST BADEN) - An Orange County man is facing theft charges as state police allege he swiped a highway department backhoe, used it for personal reasons, and then returned it.
State Police Jasper Sgt. Chad Dick says 31-year-old Christopher Gehl of West Baden is charged with felony theft and misdemeanor criminal mischief in the incident.
The Orange County Highway Department called police on February 23rd saying a 2005 Case backhoe had apparently been taken from a jobsite on CR975 West, and had possible damaged it.
Probable cause was found to charge Gehl with taking the machine, using it for personal work and then returning it to the job site.
A summons was issued for Gehl to appear before the Orange County court on April 6th.
