(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Security Center joined the state Department of Corrections in shutting down all visitations and programs involving outside individuals due to fears over the swine flu.
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says he apologizes to families that this affects, but also says he hopes the close-off will be short-lived.
Craig told us the state Department of Corrections closed off all their prison facilities to visitors and other outsiders, and Craig says he felt he should do the same both out of concern for the safety of the inmates inside and because the state DoC pays for the health care of some of their inmates they have lodged in Lawrence County.
Craig also has a bit of a reprieve as the jail's overcrowding problem has subsided.
Last week, the Lawrence County jail was between 2 and 6 inmates over capacity, but it's back under now due to a small clear-out earlier this week.
