(MITCHELL) - Astronaut Virgil I (Gus) Grissom’s childhood home is nearing its remodeling completion.
The house owners hope to have the building open by spring 2010 or sooner, so that children from all over the US will be able to see how Mitchell's hometown hero was able to grow up in a middle class surrounding and become an astronaut.
Since buying the property, Virgil I. Grissom Memorial, Inc. has installed a new heating/cooling system, replaced the old roof with original style wood shingles, repaired all of the plastered walls and ceilings, refinished the wood floors, tiled the kitchen floor, wallpapered the walls, and have accepted many donated items for display.
The corporation is still in need of donations for period style furniture and money donations to help pay for maintenance and utilities.
For those who donate $50 or more, an original wood shingle from Grissom's house and a certificate of authenticity will be delivered to you.
Mail donations to Virgil I. Grissom Memorial, Inc., 1017 Rariden Hill, Mitchell, IN 47446.
