(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The Bloomington Police Department is bumping up patrols as Indiana University students arrive for the fall semester.
Extra officers will begin working during the evening and nighttime hours to address excessive noise under the department's quiet nights initiative.
The initiative began in 2001 following issues of of underage drinking and excessive partying in the beginning of the school year.
Bloomington Police Chief Michael Diekhoff states "the first couple of weeks away from home is an opportunity for some (students) to test the limits of their new found freedom..."
The Bloomington Police Department issued 527 Noise Ordinance Violations in 2008.
The fine for the first violation is $50.00; the fine for a second violation within twelve months is $100.00 and a third violation within twelve months is $500.00.
Individuals arrested on criminal charges of Illegal Consumption, Public Intoxication or Disorderly Conduct who qualify for the Prosecutor's Pre-Trial Diversion Program for first time offenders pay a minimum eligibility fee of $403.00.
