(BEDFORD, IN) - Shots were fired at Bedford police officials Sunday evening while they searched for a man believed to be responsible for battering a woman.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers responded and arrived at a Bedford hospital following up on reports of a female that had been battered.
After speaking with the 21-year-old, police determined that 30-year-old Kenneth Tipton of Bedford was responsible for the battery of the young woman.
While at the door of Tipton's residence, officials were greeted by an unknown individual who stated that Tipton was not at the residence.
While police spoke with the man at the door, Tipton, who actually was inside the J Street residence, attempted to leave through a back room.
As officers walked away from the property, Tipton opened fire on both officers and vehicles in front of the house.
Law enforcement, including the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police, formed a perimeter around the house.
After negotiating with the gunman, Tipton surrendered without any incident at around 8:21PM.
During a search of Tipton's residence, police officials discovered a marijuana growing operation.
Kenneth Tipton was taken to Lawrence County Detention Center and charged with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
