(BROAWNTSOWN, IN) - The final damage done to several businesses in Downtown Brownstown has been estimated at nearly half a million dollars.
Although the cause of the fire may not be determined for several weeks, local officials seem confident the fire was most likely caused by a lightning storm which moved through the area shortly before the fire.
Brownstown Fire Chief Andy Lockman stated that several witnesses reported seeing lightning strike just before the fire's discovery.
Cleanup of the wreckage began Tuesday; the outer walls of the two buildings, which are the only structures still standing are expected to be demolished following the cleanup.
The large fire closed US 50 for several hours in downtown Brownstown Monday as firefighters battled the blaze.
At least two firefighters were taken to the hospital following the fire, and several others were treated at the scene.
Authorities say the fire started at B&R Swap Shop and spread to a neighboring business, Flowers by Connie.
