Bloomington GE Plant Lays Off 164

Last updated on Tuesday, September 15, 2009

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The General Electric plant in Bloomington sent 164 employees home with pink slips.

The factory was expecting previously planned factory downtime, however according to company officials, the long-anticipated layoffs did not cut as deeply as expected.

In July, GE officials stated that 190 workers would be laid off this month.

The layoffs are part of a plan to keep the company which employs 720, open.

Officials say that no more layoffs are planned following Monday's layoffs and that layoffs are due to sloping sales in refrigerators in which the factory makes.

Plant manager Kent Suiters GE says about 50% of employees being laid off are eligible for retirement.
