(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - A Monroe County Jail correctional officer was arrested for theft and drug-related charges Tuesday afternoon.
32-year-old Jason Noah Helton of Solsberry has since resigned from his jail position after being suspended from the job without pay following the arrest.
According to police officials, officers were called to the Lowe's home improvement store after receiving reports of a possibly intoxicated man wondering around in the inside of the store with a small child.
Helton was discovered standing in an aisle, swaying and talking to himself all while hitting himself in the face with a cell phone.
Police were on the scene at around 2:00PM and witnesses at the store informed the authorities that the man had been wondering around the store since 11:00AM.
Seven knives and two pill bottles, containing controlled substances were found on Helton.
During their investigation, officers interviewed and arrested David Meadows and Nathan Meadows, who informed police that Helton had paid them in prescription pills to steal tools; one of the men had over $200 dollars of stolen tools in his pockets and 14 loratab pills.
After searching Helton's truck, officers found nearly $700 of stolen merchandise from Lowe's, including a knife set, a Harley Davidson night-light, a cable cutter, a bolt cutter and flashlights.
Helton was arrested on preliminary charges of theft, possession of a controlled substance, dealing in a controlled substance and neglect of a dependent, all Class D felonies, and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor; he has since bonded out of jail.
The one-year-old child Helton was inside the store has been released to child protective services.
35-year-old David Bartholomew Meadows of Freedom who was paid to steal tools along with his brother, Nathan Meadows was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance and theft and booked into Monroe County Jail at 4:35PM Tuesday.
David's bond was set at $4,000 surety, $500 cash.
32-year-old Nathan Kyle Meadows of Gosport, was arrested on a preliminary charge of theft and booked into Monroe County Jail at 5:08PM Tuesday.
Nathan's bond was set at $4,000 surety, $500 cash, but he is being held on a Lawrence County charge.
