(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - Although former IU Basketball Coach Bob Knight didn’t go to Assembly Hall to accept his award last night, his presence was felt there anyway in a letter read to the 800 people in attendance.
Knight gave two reasons for his absence: he didn't want media attention on him to detract from the five others being honored, and he still has hard feelings toward IU for firing him nine years ago.
The letter, read by former Herald-Times Sports Editor Bob Hammel said: "I just have to much negative feeling toward some people for things they did or did not do during my last years and have no understanding of athletics or honesty."
Knight did thank fans and his former players.
He also praised current IU Head Basket Ball Coach, Tom Crean.
