(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The Monroe County Solid Waste Management District reminds residents that although it might be fall and the smell of burning leaves seems to come with the season, that smell can be hazardous to your health.
Smoke from burning leaves contains about one pound of pollution for every five pounds of leaves burned department officials say.
They city advises that the best alternative to burning leaves is to use a lawn mower that mulches up the leaves directly on your lawn.
They also advise that it is illegal to burn leaves within the City of Bloomington.
Outside the city a burn barrel must be used.
