(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - A 50-year-old Bloomington man has pleaded guilty to molesting two girls.
50-year-old Harvey O. Coffey was initially arrested for the crime about 10 months ago and has been incarcerated at the Monroe County Jail since.
Harvey Coffey.
He was scheduled for trial Monday morning but instead chose to plead guilty.
Coffey has admitted to two counts of child molesting, one as a Class A felony with a range of penalties between 20 to 50 years and the other charge reduced to a less-serious Class B felony with penalties ranging from six to 20years.
Through a plea agreement with the court, an additional child molesting charge was dismissed as well as all other charges relating to Coffey admitting to smoking marijuana with the girls, saying it kept the children calm.
Police were informed of Coffey's illegal sexual activity with both a 12-year-old and a nine-year-old when railroad workers found the nine-year-old victim shivering in the cold without a coat as she tried to climb aboard a slow-moving train near Butler Park in January; her hands covered in blood.
The train conductor noticed the girl, stopped the train and took her into the warm locomotive while he called police.
During an investigation into the case, the girl told a Child Protective Services worker Coffey had been sexually assaulting her for a year; the 12-year-old later informed officials that Coffey had been doing the same things to her since she was five-years-old.
Coffey will be sentenced on February 3rd.
