(MITCHELL, IN) - The Indiana Department of Transportation has recently selected the city of Mitchell to have portions of the city’s sidewalks replaced as part of the state’s 2009 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program.
Mitchell Mayor Dan Terrell says that the city applied for the grant in hopes of improving sidewalks, crosswalks, curb ramps and signs around Mitchell schools to ensure the safety of young Mitchell residents as they made their daily travel to school.
Mitchell was one of 19 cities to be accepted for the sidewalk grant out of a total of 39 applicants.
Sidewalks from Teke Burton Drive along the south side of Hankcock Avenue down to Sheeks Drive, as well as sidewalks from Hancock Avenue along Brooke Street to 12th Street will be replaced.
Department of Transportation officials say that the program is designed to make walking and bicycling to school safe for Hoosier children.
