Advice: Improve School Culture, Improve Academic Benchmarks

Last updated on Wednesday, March 31, 2010

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The founder of a Bloomington-based foundation who helped transform schools in Fort Wayne is offering advice on how to do the same with other districts throughout the state.

Hope Foundation President Alan Feinstein says it's a matter of improving school culture. He says better communication between administrators, teachers and students leads to better academic performance.

Feinstein cites recent results at Schaumbaugh Elementary School in Fort Wayne -- where that game plan led to a 54 percent gain in reaching academic benchmarks in about one year.

Feinstein's book -- "Failure Is Not An Option" -- describes what he thinks it takes to improve Indiana schools. It's available at most bookstores or online at www.hopefoundation.org.
